Important Call (Mississauga Deanery)
800 members of the Deer Lake First Nation (located in northern Ontario near the Manitoba-Ontario border) have been evacuated due to forest fires and are staying in hotels in the Mississauga area. Serena Kenny, who works with the Kenora Chiefs Organization office, is in town helping to coordinate support.
Message from Serena:
"Some of the small things that have brought a lot of comfort. Items needed:
1. New underwear, bras, and socks (all ages and sizes)
2. Empty backpacks and duffel bags – many evacuees left with nothing, and will need a way to carry items home when it’s time to return
3. Fresh homemade baked goods – this was a request from Elders, who deeply miss the comfort of home-baked treats and tea while staying in hotels where meals come from frozen catering boxes
Items can be dropped off at the Embassy Hotel near Pearson Airport (262 Carlingview Drive, Toronto).
We’re also looking for help with evening activities for evacuees. If you or anyone on your network would like to help in any way whether through donations, volunteering, or outreach we would be so grateful. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need more details."
People could contact Serena directly; her cell phone number is 807-464-3064.
